How To Convert Mpegs To Avi(Divx)
Updated: 06/02/2003 02:19 PM

This is meant for all the newbbies that get frustrated with the quality versus CD's so i thought posting a guide, just as to help u recompress the movies with minimum or no loss of quality.

The tools you will need are:-
-------------------------------------
1. A Bitrate Calculator (www.divx-digest.com ---> Software)
2. VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.com)
3. A Divx Codec (Preferred 3.11 or 4.12)
3. An Mpeg or Dat file (VCD)

Steps:-
-------------
No1
---------
Load up the mpeg/dat file in windows media player or any preffered player u want as to get the length of the movie, if its in 2 or 3 parts etc do the same for all and add up the whole time, eg... 45:11 + 53:27 = 98:38

No2
------------
Run the Bitrate calculator and enter the length of the movie, then chose the settings "Data rate Vs Mp3 Audio" as to have a minimum loss of quality in video, the sound is not very important in this case, because if its a low-quality --> medium quality rip it wont make any big difference is its set to either 128 or 96kbps.

e.g

For a movie length of 98:38

Data Rate  ---> 835 kbits/s
Audio Mp3  ---> 128 kbits/s

or
Data Rate  ---> 867 kbits/s
Audio Mp3  --->  96 kbits/s

*Note the above calculations will result in a full 700 MB (80 min CD)

No3
--------
After you've done No2, store the details in a txt file as to refer to them so u wont forget the settings.

Now Open VirtualDub and:-

In VirtualDub
File ---> Open Video File ----> *.mpg or *.dat
(It will take a bit of time to load the file cause VirtualDub reads through all the frames)

After opening the file goto  Video ---> Compression

Choose a Divx Codec and configure it according to the details u got from the bitrate calculator (Here u will need only the Data Rate)

After choosing the desired Divx Codec, click on "Configure" and set the "Data Rate" a.k.a "Output Video Bitstream", press "Ok" twice.

No4
-----------
Now Goto  Audio and set "Full Processing Mode",  again Audio ---> Compression ---> Mp3 (Set the desired Sound rate u got from the bitrate calculator)

And that's it your almost ready to re-compress your first movie in Divx!!!.

Now check if in "Video" and "Audio" both settings are set in "Full Processing Mode"

Finally goto File ---> Save as avi... (Use ur movie preffered name)

And sit and wait till the movie gets re-compressed (Shouldnt take very long depending on the length of the movie usually on an AMD 800Mhz for a 2hr movie it take me 2.2hrs)

*** Also if u are performing other tasks u can set VirtualDub while compressing in "Idle Mode" and de-click viewing the source and the output so it wont eat-up ur CPU power.

Well thats all any additions, suggestions are welcome:)

Any probs just IM me
